What is a Mindful Leadership Model?

The Mind to Lead mindful leadership model explains how the new field of neuroleadership works and how leaders can use their brains to guide teams and organizations through tough economic times.

Traditional Leadership Development

Many of the leaders I work with feel that traditional leadership training hasn’t fully prepared them for the complexities of today’s dynamic work environment including:

  • Multi-generational workforce
  • Continuously advancing technology
  • 24/7 global competition
  • Unrelenting pressure to achieve more with shrinking resources.

As a result of these and other challenges, most modern leaders suffer tremendous stress due to perpetual performance pressure.

One Cause of Leadership Suffering:
An Untrained Mind

No matter what’s happening outside you---regardless of how overworked, resisted, or alone you are externally---one cause of your suffering radiates from the inside, from your mind. Much of your suffering is due, in large part, to an untrained mind.

The Solution: Train the Mind to Lead The solution to an untrained mind is developing a new relationship with your brain and mind. The Mind to Lead brain-based leadership development model will introduce you to a new approach---a powerful, emerging field called neuroleadership.

Neuroleadership is a term coined by David Rock in 2006; it’s an innovative field that blends leadership development with an understanding of how the mind works (Rock and Schwartz, 2006).

My neuroleadership model gives you the mind tools to deactivate unpleasant sensations, thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in yourself and others. Just like defusing a bomb, The Mind to Lead model moves you from negative to neutral.

And, neutral is the new positive.

Regardless of your age or life experiences, your brain is very flexible.

Neuroplasticity

Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections. It’s like building new super highways between the towns and cities in your mind and body.

Neuroplastic changes create structural modifications in your brain (the hardware or gray matter looks different) that are accompanied by functional brain and mind changes (software improvements). These functional changes include:

  • Improved immune system
  • Enhanced emotion regulation
  • Better stress response

The purpose of The Mind to Lead neuroleadership model is to teach you tools that change your brain and your mind, so that you lead more effectively and experience less stress.

”When training opportunities are available, I try to make the most of them. Other trainings are gone from memory, but this one stood out in a personal way. That was the value of it. I still reflect on it.
It definitely left an impression.”

What Leaders Want

Over the last twenty years, I’ve trained thousands and coached hundreds of mindful leaders. When I asked what they wanted most, I repeatedly heard these three outcomes:

1. To stay calm

2. To be confident

3. To use power mindfully

I developed The Mind to Lead brain-based model to help leaders obtain these three outcomes regardless of the intense challenges in their jobs and organizations. Staying calm and being confident are predominantly internal experiences, while using power is an external expression of leadership ability. Each outcome supports and builds on the others.

The End of Leadership Suffering

Our neuroleadership services help you to suffer less by developing a new relationship with your mind.

My extensive background in mindfulness and leadership coaching allows me to help you do that with your mind. Read about Suzanne's background.

This brain-based leadership development model will train your mind to:

  • Eliminate distractions, and focus on completing projects
  • Let go of frustration and anger about people, processes and projects
  • Overcome your procrastination, and finish nagging tasks
  • Respond calmly to stressful situations
  • Regain your confidence to make decisions and take risks
  • Be firm, and hold your direct reports accountable
  • Stop wasting time daydreaming about how things were great in the past or will be better in the future; be grateful for how things are right now, no matter what
  • Resolve conflicts with irritating co-workers
  • Be self-assured in meetings with your boss or senior management
  • Enjoy yourself, right here and right now, no matter what

How Do You Get There?

The Mind to Lead neuroleadership model is based on training your mind for attunement. Attunement uses specific brain-based tools to get a sense of what’s going on for someone and then mirroring the person’s experience back. It allows the other person to feel heard and understood which contributes to positive mind states such as safety and trust as well as to improved job performance.

In order to effectively receive and interpret signals from another person---interpersonal attunement---it’s important to, first, be able to recognize those signals in yourself. This heightened awareness of yourself is called intrapersonal attunement.

If you can’t manage and motivate yourself, you’ll never be able to lead others.

The three neuroleadership styles--- Calm, Confident, and Powerful---result from the use of three attunement processes: Mindfulness, Exploration, and Influence. This neuroleadership model shows how to use these three processes to increase both intrapersonal and interpersonal attunement.
